Motion 8

"This house believes that "conscious consumerism" has done more harm than good 

towards the beneficiaries of these advocacies/campaigns."

In this motion our team was appointed as the government. Before I did research, at first I was down because it 

seemed like the opposition has advantage towards us. But then I realized that every “good thing” always has adverse 

effects. I did some research and i found some. It turns out that conscious consumers let”s say has a “behavioral effect”. 

Once a consumer buys product that seems “ethical”, they start acting unethically. For example a person who 

takes care of the environment buys a “Go Green” bag, he/she will think that he/she has done his/ her part to the 

environment therefore starts acting unethically and does not care for the environment anymore. 

The beneficiary-- the environment, isn’t going to be better. In the situation of the Tom’s shoes wherein if you 

purchase a pair of Tom’s shoes, a kid in Africa will also have one. Yes, it is good that a kid in Africa will have a 

pair of shoes but consider their lifestyle. In Africa people walk miles and miles though long terrains and in the 

long run, those low quality shoes won’t survive and will lose its worth. We are not actually solving the world’s 

problems with conscious consumerism, we are just giving them a little hope that fades away through time. 

In this example, it is the firms or companies that benefit conscious consumerism, not the beneficiaries of this 

advocacy. It also hinders future donations to charity. Once a conscious consumer buys products that they know 

will help someone or something, they will think that they have done their part and won’t donate to charity anymore. 

Therefore groups that have the will or mission to really do something about the world’s problems will receive 

lesser amounts of donation because of these “conscious consumerism”. It also obscures how the market perceive 

the world’s greatest problems. Like in the pink ribbon movement, the breast cancer society received tons and tons 

of donations from the public but actually, the leading problem in the United States today isn’t breast cancer, but 

heart disease. There are more people giving donations and helping breast cancer patients rather than helping those 

with heart disease. “Conscious consumerism” also gives way to market blindness. For example you 

bought a pink t shirt to support against breast cancer not knowing that the pink t shirt you bought 

actually contains toxins and chemicals that ironically causes breast cancer. “Conscious consumerism” is also a 

waste of natural and human resources. Just like in the example of the Tom’s shoes, 

it is not that useful for African kids to receive shoes that won’t last for a lifetime. 

Even if we are conscious that this company is giving shoes to African kids, we are also unconscious about its effect to the environment, to the society, and to ourselves. Conscious consumerism doesn’t eradicate the world’s biggest and deepest problems. Conscious consumerism is about business as usual.

Motion 7

"This house would revoke architecture licenses from architects of establishments 

that significantly damage the environment."

I oppose this motion because first of all, an architect cannot pass or make a project a reality if it will not be signed 

by engineers or any person that it above him/ her. Second, why must it only be the architects? There are many 

people who bring significant damage to the environment or even worse. Third, it is the government that gives 

an architect a license and if they are to take it away from him for a not so valid reason, then that would be equal 

to them corrupting the architect’s money. It is tiring and stressful to study architecture and his license will only 

be revoked for a single project that not only he passes it? Come on. Every building has a permit from the 

government so it means that they approve of the construction of such infrastructure and they are aware of the 

consequences. If ever such project harmed or will harm the environment, then they shouldn’t have approved of it. 

It is very confusing as to why the government would have this motion that in the first place, they have gone through 

all the processes.

Motion 6

"This house believes that countries that are governed by religious laws that 

prohibit women from getting an education should send their girls to school."

In this motion before i heard the insights of sir, i agree with the government in this. Everyone has the right to 
education and it is unfair that the government itself is the one prohibiting them to go to school. 
I also heard about the girl who really wants to study but they did not allow her. 

Her persistence to go to school opened up the eyes of some people regarding this. There are only a few countries 
in the world that still prohibit their girls to go to school. Personally i want it to change. The discrimination of gender, the status of men over women, all of it. We live in a world full of hope and new ideas. 

Even if some governments are still using the old ones, i hope that someday they will realize that women are 
capable of changing the world. That it is time to open up their minds to the idea of equality and educate woman and 

of course the society.

Motion 5

"This house would force and finance the children of farmers to take up 

agriculture- related courses and pursue agricultural careers."

In this motion our group was appointed as the opposition (Yes!). I am a hundred 

percent against this motion. Even if we say that our country has less farmers and we 

need more, that doesn’t mean that we have to force the farmers’ children to take up agricultural course. It will be 

okay if their children agree to it, but the reality is they are aware of the hardships of being a farmer so they wouldn't

want to become one. It is a violation of the human rights, the right to vote. Also, it is the taxes of the people that 

they will use. Once they graduate, there is a big possibility that they will either work in services like call center 

agents or they will work in line of what they have studied but there is no heart and passion to it. Today, most 

children who graduate from agricultural courses happen to be working as call center agents. Things will only 

get worse if you force them. The people’s taxes will only be put into waste. Since we are to use tax, why not 

utilize it to give more compensation to farmers or agriculture related jobs? We could give them more 

land to plant on, more benefits, and health care insurance. Give the future generations the 

willingness to take this course rather than forcing them to do so. We could advertise agriculture in the K-12 

curriculum. In this way the agriculture sector of the Philippines will improve and you have given everyone the 

right to choose for their future.

Motion 4

"This house would use biological weaponry against terrorist groups that destroy 

the environment."

In this motion our group was appointed as the government side which is bad news

for me because i am against this. Facts and data proves that biological weaponry 

is indeed very successful in eradicating the enemy but it can lead to massive 

civilian casualties. There are more ways to stop terrorism without being too 

risky. Biological weaponry is too risky. Throughout history these types of weaponry 

are used by terrorists to induce terror to other people. In some scenarios wherein 

the military used these, there are mass civilian casualties, although it is 

effective to stop terrorists. If the government uses these, then it gives the 

terrorists the idea that it is okay to do so therefore leading to worse scenarios 

and more casualties. There are more ways to stop these kinds of people. 

Biological weaponry is just too risky and unsafe. Throughout the debate even if 

i was participating in the battle, inside of me there was another battle 

going on. My ideals vs. the eagerness to win the debate. In the end i managed 

to trick myself and found a "non lethal biological weaponry" excuse that 

actually worked.

Motion 3

"In instances of global pandemics wherein the virus disease is highly contagious and has a prolonged incubation period. This House would not accept any refugees from affected countries."

In this motion i stand beside the opposition to let the refugees of that 

particular country enter our state for it is the right thing to do.  

If we didn’t help them and that pandemic happened in our country, then in turn, there will be a great possibility 

of them not helping us. It would also affect the way the other countries perceive us and the trade and relationships 

between nations. So it’s better if we accept the refugees but have them quarantined to still ensure the safety 

and well-being of our countrymen.

Motion 2

"This House believes that it is legitimate for private citizens to use violence to stop poachers in the act".

In the second debate, the motion was about the legitimacy for civilians to use 

violence against poachers caught in the act. group 3 played the role as the 

government and group 4 took place as the opposition. the government side did 

research and it can be fully determined that they were prepared during the debate. 

the opposition however came unprepared during the match. the strong ideas and 

arguments came from the opposition whip which supposedly should have come from 

the leader of opposition and deputy leader of opposition. the ideas on both 

sides were inconsistent. the whips gave the strong arguments which is inappropriate, 

for their arguments cannot be rebutted anymore. the government took the win and 

the second debate turned out to be better than the first. 

Personally i think it is legitimate for civilians to use violence against poachers 

caught in the act only if they have the capabilities to do so. If they do not, 

then they shouldn't. If you do have the capability to stop crime then you should 

rather than doing nothing. I grew up with this principle so if i were to choose 

then i would stand by the government that it would be legitimate for civilians 

to use violence against poachers. As what Edmund Burke said, "the only triumph 

of evil is for good men to do nothing".
